5 Ways to Wear Espadrilles This Summer

When summer rolls around, it’s time to store the boots and dust off all the lighter summer styles. And one shoe is preferred above all: espadrilles. With their lightweight beige sole and variety of heel heights, espadrilles are a style that can carry you wherever the day takes you.

Dating back to the 14th century, espadrilles originated in the Catalonia region of Spain. They were first the shoe of choice for peasants, due to their comfortable sole, durable materials, and functional silhouette. Typically crafted from esparto rope, the shoes remain a go-to summer style today, and are available in both flat and heeled versions.

They’re a preferred style of celebrities like Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, who favor castañer wedges, with their pump-like front cover and fabric ties. Plenty of designers have reimaged the classic staple. Chanel has come to be known for their double-C logo espadrilles, which are renewed every year in new colorways and materials. Meanwhile, brands like Ganni have taken the summer classic into edgy territory with leather straps and chunky hardware.

No matter how old or varied espadrilles are, styling them can be hard. For all the comfort and convenience of wearing them, there’s also debates around whether they’re appropriate to wear in non-casual settings. And even when you do want to go for a laid-back style, it’s hard to pull off an on-the-go outfit that doesn’t result in beachwear.

Luckily we compiled some tried-and-true pairings that make the classic style easy to wear. Ahead, find inspiration for how to wear espadrilles this summer.

Wide-Leg Pants

Summertime heat is the perfect excuse to get on the wide-leg pants train. The loose silhouette pairs well with flat-form espadrilles, giving a casual elevated style to your everyday summer uniform. To balance the oversized silhouette, a cropped, boxy top with fun details—whether it’s an embellishment or fringe—is a wise choice. Keep the palette in neutral shades for a monochrome outfit that feels fresh and luxurious.

A Maxi Dress

The urge to wear bold colors heightens during the summer months. With a beige base, Espadrilles are easy to pair with bright hues, offering a great canvas. A maxi dress in a citrus color is one way to style espadrilles, especially when paired with an oversized woven bag in a similar bold shade. For an added twist, go for heeled strapped espadrilles that give a more dressed up feel to the look.

Long Shorts

Short shorts may be great for beach outings and poolside days. But when it comes to summer workwear, long shorts are the answer to the ever-present conundrum of heat-proof office-ready outfits. Still, there’s no reason you can’t add a casual element in the form of espadrilles. Gladiator-style espadrilles add an intricate detail to your office look.

A Bold Suit

If you live in monochrome suits, there’s no reason to stop during the summertime. While boots or pumps are the go-to for colder seasons, the summer staple shoe should be espadrille wedges. The controversial silhouette (you either love it or hate it) is an elevated take on the traditional casual espadrille, giving you the chance to wear the style in more tied-up scenarios. To take it even further, pair the outfit with an oversized clutch instead of a tote or top handle bag for a fitting balance between casual and elevated.

A Maxi Skirt

There’s no better way to channel French Riviera energy than pairing a maxi skirt with espadrilles. The high-low combo, which can be topped off with a T-shirt or knit sweater, is a luxe outfit formula that’s perfect to elevate your on-the-go looks or even a vacation outing. It’s important to note that volume is a key element for the skirt, in order to have a ball gown-like feel. For an added touch, choose a straw hat—preferably a wide-brimmed number—that can take the coastal French girl vibes to the next level.
