Actor Mikey Madison, known for her roles in the Scream franchise and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, among many other titles, is hard at work promoting her upcoming film Anora and she’s making sure to include the communities represented along the way.
Ahead of the film’s premiere in October, Anora stars Mikey Madison and Lindsey Normington held a private screening and Q&A session for sex workers and strippers. As captured in fan footage online, Madison took the chance to praise the film’s choreographer, Kennady Schneider, during the session.
“She taught me everything. She taught me to twerk, which is something I’ll always be grateful for,” Madison told the crowd about Schneider. “She was such a wealth of information. She was so generous with her time, talking to me, teaching me everything, giving me so many details that added such incredible nuance to the film and character and just the realism of this story, which was so important to me, so I’ll forever be grateful to her.”
Madison went on to praise pole dancers for their endurance. “That kind of dancing is the most physically challenging thing I’ve ever done in my life,” she continued, admitting she had even learned to fight with dogs, and it didn’t compare. “Pole dancing by far is the most difficult thing I’ve ever done, so I have so much respect for you girls.”
Madison plays the titular role of Anora — a.k.a. Ani, a young Uzbek-American stripper from New York City — in Anora, which is written and directed by The Florida Project‘s Sean Baker. The film premiered earlier this year at Cannes and won the coveted Palme d’Or. It follows the story of Ani as she falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch.
