I, Jailynn Taylor, am a proud outfit repeater. I have no shame in wearing my clothes till the buttons fall off and seams rip—and even then, as a former fashion designer, I sew them right back up. Sustainability is chic, and having a uniform you can depend on when you feel like you have nothing else to wear is even chicer. And right now, Paintcolors’ Button-Up Shirt is the piece I’m wearing on loop. My day-to-day styling is super simple, pairing it with Levi’s shorts, jeans, sandals, and sneakers for daytime wear and taking it to the next level with chic accessories when I want to dress it up.
Paintcolors Button-Up Shirt
The button-up shirt comes in 20 colors, including the classic white I own, pink, light blue, green, and black. Sizes range from S to XXL, but keep in mind that it does have a more oversized fit (I wear a size large). It’s made from medium-weight 100 percent cotton and has a wrinkle-proof textured design, so you don’t have to worry about ironing. It features a button-front closure, large pockets on the chest, and a mid-thigh length that makes it easy to style with jeans, linen pants, sneakers, denim shorts, and sandals. I rounded up my favorite pieces to style with this button down below; your perfect summer capsule wardrobe awaits.
Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Jean
I avoid styling the button-up shirt with slim-fitting jeans to keep that casual feel, so I often pair it with Madewell’s Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Jeans and cuff them at the hem to show a little ankle. Similar styles include Free People’s Deep Trance Wide-Leg Boyfriend Jeans and Joe’s Margot High-Waist Straight-Leg Jeans that both have a light wash and relaxed fit. To add to that cool factor, opt for a distressed style like Gap’s Mid-Rise Girlfriend Jeans that has rips on the knee, hips, and behind. Levi’s Wedgie Straight style is the only exception to my close-to-the-body jeans rule; they’re my favorite everyday jeans, and because they have a cropped fit that opens up toward the hem, they feel more easygoing.
Dr. Scholl’s Time Off Lace-Up Sneaker
My current summer uniform? Paintcolors’ Button-Up Shirt, Madewell’s Wide-Leg Jeans, and Dr. Scholl’s Time Off Lace-Up Sneaker. I plan to take this outfit formula into fall with ultra-comfy sneakers like Keds’ Champion Canvas Lace-Up Sneaker or its lace-free Double-Decker Sneaker. More honorable comfy white sneaker mentions: Puma’s Carina Leather Sneaker for a monochrome look and Tory Burch’s Howell Court Sneaker, which offers a pop of color at the heel.
Aritzia Lodge Linen Pants
As a shopping editor, finding a good pair of linen pants is hard, and even harder if you want a unique color like the green ones I own. Reformation’s Fernando Wide-Leg Linen Pants come in a nautical stripe and check prints, while my go-to Faleave Linen Wide-Leg Pants come in vibrant shades. While I love a pop of color or fun print, a classic white or beige pair is essential. Aritzia’s Lodge Linen Pants are also available in neutral shades and have the same breezy fit.
Levi’s 501 Original Shorts
When my shorts are on the short side, I feel comfortable styling them with Paintcolors’ Button-Up Shirt because the oversized fit covers my butt. I own an older version of the Levi’s 501 Original Shorts, but if you’re looking for more coverage, I recommend the 501 Mid-Thigh Short. Madewell’s Curvy Perfect Vintage Shorts are a bit longer and less distressed for a more polished look, while these Agolde Parker Cutoffs and Topshop’s Denim Comfort Stretch Shorts only have distressing at the hem, but are similar in length to my go-to Levi’s.
Amazon Essentials Strappy Slide Flat Sandal
I either pair my button-up shirt with comfy Dr. Scholl’s Sneakers or a flat, plush-sole sandal similar to this Amazon Essentials Strappy style. I prefer a sandal that feels like I’m barefoot, like my favorite Project Cloud Flip-Flops—I even opt for a color that matches my skin tone for a seamless, leg-elongating look. Birkenstock’s Arizona Big-Buckle Slide Sandal has also been on my wishlist. Its vibrant orange color and bold gold details would effortlessly flow with any choice of styling and make a statement.
