We must confess we still believe (still believe) Britney Spears has got it going on!
The 37-year-old pop star returned to her roots, channeling her iconic ‘… Baby One More Time” schoolgirl look in an Instagram post on June 28.
The award-winning artist posted a mirror selfie on Thursday night showing off her toned tummy in a tied-up white blouse and pleated plaid miniskirt.
There were a few minor differences in her updated take on the iconic outfit. For instance, she swapped out the black knee-high socks for Birkenstock sandals (very 2019 of her). And she opted for her now go-to ponytail hairstyle instead of the super ‘90s touch of the fluffy pink pom-poms in pigtail braids.
“I went shade shopping today but found nothing,” she wrote in the accompanying caption. “Oh well….. but I did find a nice bracelet!”
Baby One More Time
“… Baby One More Time” is essentially what launched the then 16-year-old into stardom. And while it is a good tune, it definitely wasn’t just the catchy lyrics that put her on the map. This now-legendary look became an instant sensation, creating controversy and gaining fans. And as it turns out, it was thanks to Spears herself.
“The outfits looked kind of dorky, so I was like, ‘Let’s tie up our shirts, and be cute,’” she told People back in 2000. “It was about being a girl and knowing about fashion.”
And the whole look was a bargain! The music video director, Nigel Dick, told MTV News in 2009 that the entire outfit came from Kmart. “I was told at the time not one piece of clothing in the video cost more than $17,” he said. “On that level, it’s real. That probably, in retrospect, is a part of its charm.”
